Tether has announced plans to open-source its Bitcoin Mining Operating System (MOS) in a bid to democratize the mining sector. The move according to Tether will help eliminate entry barriers to the industry, encouraging more organizations to participate.

The Chief Executive Officer of Tether, Paolo Ardoino made the revelation on Monday through a post on his official X page. As revealed, the new innovation will reduce the gap between institutional and small mining companies.

Also, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin said the new Bitcoin Mining Operating System will reduce the reliance on software hosted by third parties. More so, the system comes with a peer-to-peer IoT architecture that makes it more scalable, resilient, and modular.

It is worth mentioning that the announcement surfaced shortly after Paolo Ardoino said Tether has no plans of going public. The disclosure came in response to how Circle, another renowned stablecoin issuer, entered the public market.

Furthermore, the CEO confirmed that miners can deploy the operating system from Raspberry Pi units to full-fledged industrial mining sites. Ardoino said the MOS is designed to support numerous miners with redundant mainframes and advanced monitoring capabilities.

Likewise, Tether’s MOS has native plugins that are compatible with various mining machine vendors and cooling containers. Speaking more on the functionalities of the new tool, Paolo Ardoino stated that the OS integrates with core mining electrical equipment like thermostats, breakers, and power meters.

The CEO of Tether discussed how the open-source posture of the innovation enables developers to build and share custom plugins for new mining hardware. He also hinted at the possibility of small businesses using the MOS with solar-powered facilities to mine Bitcoin.

This indication is a major breakthrough in the push of powering Bitcoin mining with renewable energy. The MOS is an attempt to usher in an era of decentralized, independent, and smarter Bitcoin mining.

However, while answering questions about the launching of the MOS, the CEO confirmed that the tool will not be available until the fourth quarter of 2025. He discussed how open-sourcing the MOS will require the Tether team to write many documentation, guides, and repositories for public usage.
